Abstract

   

Introduction: Cinnamon stomachic mixture of Thai National List of Essential Medicines; Herbal medicines is used for treatment of dyspepsia. This preparation is increasingly prescribed in many community hospitals and is also produced for commercial purpose. The classification methods of the mixture have not been reported. This study aimed to develop the near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) technique with chemometric method for qualitative analysis of cinnamon stomachic mixture. Materials and methods: The samples in-house preparations are 27 samples from 4 sources, sample in hospital preparations are 18 samples from 5 hospitals and the commercial products are 12 samples from 4 sources. All samples were determined using NIR method by integrating sphere at 4,000-10,000 nm, resolution 4 cm-1. All NIR spectra of cinnamon stomachic mixture samples was analyzed by discriminant analysis and similarity match analysis. Samples from in house and hospital preparations have similar ingredients but different sources of herb and preservative in formulation. The commercial products are different ingredient from in-house preparations. Results: Discriminant analysis can be classify the mixture into two groups; in-house preparations and the commercial products. Similarity match analysis the results showed match value between in-house preparations compared with hospital preparations and commercial products were 19.49-53.13% and 9.06-45.64%, respectively. Conclusion: The near infrared spectrophotometers (NIR) technique with discriminant analysis could be used for quality control of in-house preparations and the commercial cinnamon stomachic mixture products.
