Abstract

   

Introduction: Thailand is now entering an aging society. One of the drugs most commonly used by
the elderly to treat joint pain and arthritis is diclofenac sodium. The development of the diclofenac
sodium ODFs is likely an approach to improve the patients’ compliances and cooperation.
Objectives: To develop diclofenac sodium formulation ODFs which provide the desirable film
properties. Methods: ODFs consisted of diclofenac sodium 2% , Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose
( HPMC) as film forming agents 8% , glycerin as plasticizer 45% of film forming agents and
sweetening agents (mannitol and xylitol) 1, 2 and 3% . pH value and viscosity of film solution were
carried out then casted the solution as a film and dried at 60?C for 4 hours. The transparency,
thickness, drug content, content uniformity, disintegrating time and in vitro dissolution were
performed. Results: ODFs was clear and easy to peel off from plate. pH value of ODFs were in the
range of 6.5-7.0, The range of viscosity were 162.50?3.54 to 204.50?10.61 centipoises, content
uniformity were 80.88?3.92% to 99.67?7.84%. Disintegrating time were in the range of 18.33?10.41
to 44.33?11.68 seconds. All of ODFs completely dissolved within 10 minutes and ODFs containing
3% of xylitol showed the highest dissolution rate. Conclusion: Type and concentration of
sweetening agents influenced on the characteristics of ODFs of diclofenac sodium, especially the
content uniformity, disintegrating time and in vitro dissolution.
