Abstract

   

Total curcuminoids are one of the main chemical compositions of Curcuma longa L. rhizomes. Several methods have been used to determine total curcuminoids contents. This study compared total curcuminoids content analysed by spectrophotometric method with near infrared spectroscopy (NIR). Ten turmeric samples were collected from Bantakhun district, Suratthani province, Thailand. Total curcuminoids content was determined by spectrophotometric method as the standard method in Thai Herbal Pharmacopoeia. NIR determined quantitative curcuminoids content from diffuse reflectance. Total curcuminoids content measured by spectrophotometric method were in the range of 8.03-9.83 %w/w while those from NIR were in the range of 9.09-11.54 %w/w. In addition, the particle sizes of these turmeric powders were in the range 66.45 to 145.93 mm. In summary, NIR can be an alternative method for determination of total curcuminoids content and may be applied to other plant raw materials.
