Abstract

   

Dihydrocapsaicin, a capsaicinoid and analog of capsaicin in chili peppers of the genus Capsicum, has been demonstrated to exert selective inhibition on the growth of immortalized or malignant cell lines, but not of normal cell lines. In this study, we investigated the effects of dihydrocapsaicin on cancer cell proliferation and cell cycle arrest in HeLa cells. Dihydrocapsaicin significantly inhibited cell proliferation, especially in the presence of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF- α), correlated with cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase with the downregulation of cyclin D1 expression and RB protein phosphorylation. In addition, dihydrocapsaicin in combination with TNF-α-strongly upregulated the expression of RB protein. This study indicated that dihydrocapsaicin suppressed cancer cell proliferation involved in cell cycle proteins regulation.
