Monoclonal antibody (MAb) is a monospecific immunoglobulin produced by hybridomas. Single chain variable fragment (scFv), a MAb derivative, is a fusion protein of the variable regions of the heavy (VH) and light chains (VL) of immunoglobulins, connected with a short linker peptide. MAbs and scFvs against naturally occurring pharmacological active compounds were prepared and applied to pharmacognosical works, including quality control of medicinal plants by ELISA and Eastern blotting, immunohisto- or cytochemistry localization of bioactive compounds in plants and cell lines, one-step purification by immunoaffinity chromatography, enhancement of medicinal constituents by the new technique named “Missile type molecular breeding”.
